Sequence stratigraphic characteristics of Miocene succession in Bach Long Vi area based on depositional sequence model of clastic sequence stratigraphy
Abstract
The study results of sequence stratigraphy show that the Miocene succession in Bach Long Vi area is composed of 7 sequences and separated by boundaries of erosion, unconformity and conformity. Within the Miocene sequences, 15 detailed system tracts are divided based on depositional sequence model of current clastic sequence stratigraphy. Of these, 3 lowstand systems tracts were formed during sea level fall, including the upper sequence of Middle Miocene, the lower and middle sequences of Upper Miocene respectively. These lowstand system tracts are characterised by coarsening upward parasequence/parasequence set, high sand/shale ratio, good reservoir quality and distributed mainly in slope and shelf floor areas in Block 107. They are considered important potential oil and gas reservoirs. Meanwhile, the thick, homogeneous and widespread shale layers are characterised by abundance, richness and diversity of the foraminifera, palynology assemblages of the highstand system tract, formed during the maximum sea level rise of each sequence and play the role of good oil and gas seal layers in the study area.
