Some features of larger foraminifera fossils and significance of their study
Abstract
Fossils of larger foraminifera (LF) are mostly environmental indicators or bio-indicators and stratigraphic markers or index fossils in which petroleum geologists are particularly interested. Studies of foraminifera fossils in general in many marine and island areas of Vietnam revealed that larger foraminifera fossils are present in calcareous sediments from Devonian-Carboniferous to Neogene period and especially developed during the Quaternary period in coral reef islands [12, 16-18, 22]. These geological formations usually have very high porosity, therefore the study of larger foraminifera would be useful for biostratigraphy, paleo-geography, study of depositional environment, evolution and diversity of the biota, geological surveys and marine resource evaluation (including petroleum geology). This article introduces some main features of the above mentioned fossil group.
