Abstract

Using floating storage offloading/floating production, storage and offloading (FSO/FPSO) for storage and offloading process is an effective solution for oil fields which lie in deep waters and far from shore, especially for marginal fields where the cost of building pipelines proves ineffective.
There are currently two different trends in the world: (1) building new vessels for fields with harsh environmental conditions or a long life (over 15 years), and (2) converting oil tankers for fields with a short life (less than 15 years) or benign environmental conditions such as those in West Africa, Southeast Asia and Brazil. The choice between new building and conversion will depend on the results of the economic efficiency analysis of the investment process.
The article analyses the advantages and disadvantages of each trend under the specific conditions of Vietnam. It also examines the characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages of the types of ships that can be converted into FSO/FPSO, thus giving managers and investors a more general picture that helps them select the most efficient investment plan.
