Direct indicators for predicting gas hydrate occurrence by seismic data in deepwater areas of Vietnam’s continental shelf
Abstract
Seismic methods are the most widely used approach for detection and quantification of gas hydrate in marine sediments. It appears that bottom simulating reflector (BSR) distribution and gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) may be the best indicators for gas hydrate occurrence. However, BSRs are absent in many locations where gas hydrates are known to occur. In this case, the amplitude anomalies may be a good proxy of gas hydrate.
This paper presents several examples of gas hydrate discoveries in the world as well as gas hydrate prediction from seismic data in deepwater areas of Vietnam. From the results of Vietnamese seismic data analysis, it can be considered that there are many indicators related to the existence of gas hydrates in the deepwater areas of the continental shelf of Vietnam.
Key words: Gas hydrate (GH), Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR), Gas Hydrate Stability Zone (GHSZ), amplitude anomaly.
